Index Specifications

When negotiating for work on an index, I need the following information.

  • Subject or Title of Book
  • Approximate Number of Pages
  • Expected Date of Delivery of Page Proofs to Me
  • The Date You Need Delivery of Index to You

When working on an index, I need to know index specifications. If you can provide written index specifications or a sample of the index format that you want, I will follow those. If not, I can work with you on the format that would work best for your book. Index specifications include the following:

  • Index Format: Indented or Run-in?
  • Alphabetization: Word-by-word or Letter-by-letter?
  • Depth of Indexing: How many Levels are Allowed?
  • Cross-reference Format
  • Footnotes Indexable? If yes, Format for Reference Locator.
  • Illustrations Indexable? If yes, Format for Reference Locator.
  • Length Limit to Final Index?

I am happy to review the layout of the completed index after your layout person puts the index into page proof.
